FEATURE ARTICLE
Recognize the Voices of Self-Defeat
by Guy Finley -
"Letting Go" Tuesdays, 6pm PT

A 'Q and A' with Guy Finley

Can you help me understand why I give myself away so often? I know I do it, but I am never aware of this self-defeating behavior while I'm doing it.

GF- Have you ever asked yourself, "What in the world did I just do?" or "Why did I say that cruel thing?" Who are you talking to? If you didn't sink your own ship, then who did? Something took you over. The beauty of staying awake within ourselves and remaining watchful and aware is that it is possible to see the truth of this and to be in relationship with that which never gives itself away to any negative condition. This means that when we do give ourselves away, each time we compromise ourselves without knowing it, we are asleep in that moment to what we are in relationship with. Awakening is about ending our unconscious relationship with that level of our present nature that not only gives itself away hand over fist, but also is always looking for new and better ways to do it!

Once we have become conscious of self-wrecking thoughts, how do we know the difference between going into denial about them or otherwise unconsciously repressing them?

GF- The only way it's possible to truly deliver ourselves from the punishment of our own self-wrecking thoughts is to begin awakening to their hidden cause within us. For example, self-loathing is a string of dark thoughts driven by negative emotions based in imagination about ourselves. The secret cause of self-loathing is an unconscious image we have of being better than that self we detest. So it is not a question of repressing or ignoring self-wrecking thoughts and feelings, as neither of these inner actions will free us from the effects of unwanted inner states. Seeing beyond any doubt that the thoughts that attack us do so because we have unconsciously agreed to their onslaught is what makes us quit the whole business. In a manner of speaking, at this point in our inner growth, there is no more fun or hope left for us in this kind of suffering. Then suffering falls off by itself.

One maxim of self-development I sense is true is that the way out of any stressful situation is to "go through it." How does this approach apply to reducing stress-producing thought-attacks?

GF- Everything depends upon our ability to inwardly discriminate between thoughts and feelings that are for us as opposed to those that are against us. Whenever confronted with an onslaught of internal impressions, the most powerful tool you have is to go silent. Step away from the situation inwardly by bringing everything that is going through you into your deliberate field of attention. There is a native unity in a silent mind that is able to both witness and "taste" the thoughts and feelings passing through it. It is this internal field of silence that reveals the character of any impressions and shows them for what they are. It's hard to make a mistake when your first wish is to see these thoughts and feelings instead of just unconsciously turning your will over to them.

Natural Methods for Shingles
by Linda Mackenzie, C.H.T., Ph.D.(c)

Shingles, also known as Herpes Zoster, is a viral infection that affects the nerve endings in the skin and causes a painful rash. When the shingles is activated and the virus hits the nerve endings it send signals to the brain which interprets it as severe pain, itching, burning and makes the skin most sensitive. It can occur to anyone at any age but mostly hits those over 50.

Shingles is caused by the varicella-zoster virus - the same virus that causes chickenpox. After you've had chickenpox, the virus lies inactive in nerve tissue near your spinal cord and brain. Years later, the virus may reactivate as shingles if and when you have a weakened immune system.

However more recently Shingles may be caused by getting a COVID vaccine. A study of the Pfizer vaccine published in the New England Journal of Medicine used two different measures of risk and a data set of more than 2.4 million vaccinated Israelis and the result confirmed the vaccine is associated with an excess risk of shingles - as well as inflammation of the heart, lymph node abnormalities and appendicitis. This and other reports pin blame not just on the Pfizer shots but also on Moderna's mRNA shot and all the other major COVID vaccines in use around the world, including China's Sinovac, India's Covaxin, AstraZeneca and the Janssen/Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

Other causes of Shingles are cancer, the use of anti-cancer drugs, stress, spinal cord injuries, HIV, or the use of medications such as corticosteroids or cyclosporin. In most cases one usually cannot determine what the trigger is.

SYMPTOMS

Usually an attack of Shingles is preceded by 3 or 4 days of chills, fever and aching. Then a crop of tiny fluid filled blisters appear. Although shingles can occur anywhere on your body, it most often appears as a single stripe of blisters that wraps around either the left or the right side of your abdomen underneath the ribs. This can be accompanied by: depression, fatigue, numbness, painful, swollen lymph nodes fever, shooting pain and headache. This stage of shingles can last 7-14 days. The blisters usually form scabs and drop off. Most cases of Shingles last a few weeks however, aggressive cases can be months or years after the blisters have disappeared.

The signs and symptoms usually affect only a small section of one side of your body and may include:

Pain, burning, numbness or tingling, Sensitivity to touch, A red rash that begins a few days after the pain, Fluid-filled blisters that break open and crust over, itching, Fever, Headache, Sensitivity to Light, Fatigue

Other complications from shingles can include:

Postherpetic neuralgia - shingles pain continues long after the blisters are gone, Vision loss

Neurological problems like: inflammation of the brain (encephalitis), facial paralysis, hearing, balance problems.

Skin infections

Attacking internal organs like lungs, kidneys, liver

NATURAL MIND THERAPY AND HINTS

Avoid stress and tension
Exercise - walking, yoga, tai chi
Do deep breathing exercises several times during the day
Do meditation, visualization, self-hypnosis, get out in nature
Do Deal with Your Emotions
Learning to cope and deal with emotions in positive ways can help your healing process. You are what you think - so for a positive outcome - THINK POSITIVE! Here are some of the emotions you may have to deal with and some suggestions on how to handle them:
- Denial: Look to balance your mind and work on looking at the real picture.
- Anger: acknowledge it, take an appropriate action (e.g., Punch a pillow, go into a room by yourself and scream, walk around the block, draw a picture) then let it go.
- Sadness: Let it out and cry, get support from friends, loved ones or a support group, start and write a your own healing journal, do artwork therapy, write a letter to yourself.
- Worry: is a useless emotion which accomplishes nothing and eats up your time. Time in which you can be doing something positive to help your healing process. When you get a "worry" thought acknowledge that you have it and let it go immediately.
- Change your emotions to positive ones like hope, joy and happiness
- Make your Environment Happy. Bring your favorite personal pictures, paintings, music, flowers and plants, aromatherapy fragrances with you to the hospital or even spruce up your room at home.
- Avoid negative people and situations.
- Make a list of supportive people and groups in your life and use the list!
Do Face Your Fears:
- The only thing to fear is fear itself. You are in God's hands and will be all right - no matter what..
- You create your reality with your thoughts. So if you feel, know and trust that the outcome will be positive and that you will heal - YOU WILL.
- Positive Energy resonates to a higher energetic frequency than negative. Positive energy that can make you feel good and help you face your fears can be activated by thought. The higher frequencies correlate with the upper chakras (esoteric electrical energy centers in the body) starting with the heart chakra and up to the crown chakra. To activate these centers - BUZZ. That's right just buzz like a bee. You will be surprised as to how this works.
- Another helpful hint for fear is to BREATHE. Breathe in through the nose slowly and deeply and then breathe out with the mouth in a rhythmic pattern. This will immediately lower your pulse and heart rate and get you centered. Physically it activates the Vegas nerve which is the major quieting nerve in the body. The Vegas nerve starts at the base of the brain and branches out to the heart, lungs and intestinal track. By just breathing deeply it automatically quiets your body and centers you.
- Remember fear is your friend, not an enemy. Society teaches us that fear should be avoided but reprogram your mind to make fear a friend. You can always learn something you fear and once you learn it the fear usually doesn't come back.
- Remember there are 4 steps to managing fear and turning it into a positive emotion: 1) Acknowledge your fear; 2) Feel how the fear is affecting your body; 3) Think about and determine what the best action is and 4) Do the action. Putting off the action delays releasing the fear.
- Let go of your fear, ego, rigid goals, expectations, negative attitudes and negative feelings and replace them with to Living in the Moment, trust, hope, positive intention and attitudes and positive feelings.
Do Deal with Stress
To help your healing process here are some helpful hints you can use to deal with stress:
- Use the POWER of Positive thought and positive intention
- Meditate
- Practice Relaxation for Rejuvenation
- Use Visualization. You can visualize a time when you were in perfect health and everything was going 100% right in your life. Then anytime you are having a stressful time go back to that place, visualize it and feel the joy and happiness.
- Self Hypnosis
- Listen to calming music
- Pamper yourself with a candlelit bath, etc.
- Use color therapy like soothing blues and greens.
- Take a 1 minute stress break. Close your eyes. Tell yourself you are going to be stressed for 1 minute and at the end of 1 minute you will be stress free. It works!
- Look in the mirror and use Positive Self-Talk to describe the outcome as you want it to be.
- Avoid using negative words like I can't, I won't, I shouldn't, I couldn't. Replace them: I can, I will, etc.
- Live in the Now, not the past or the future
- Don't try to control things
- Feel, Trust and Know things will be all right and they will.
